SUMMARY:Strengthening Communities\, One Partnership and One Grant at a Time
DESCRIPTION:Jim Thatcher has built a solid reputation as a public financing professional helping municipalities secure grants that make critical projects possible. Working alongside Melanie Krause\, Jim focuses on grant research\, funding identification\, and matching client needs with federal or state programs. As Jim put it\, “We try to match up a client’s project financing needs with an available grant or loan program.” Their work covers infrastructure\, parks\, downtown revitalization\, affordable housing\, and economic development—projects that communities often cannot fund on their own. \nRecently\, Jim and Melanie began work on two new TAP (Transportation Alternatives Program) grant applications for the Villages of Voorheesville and Buchanan. These grants aim to improve pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure—think safer sidewalks\, crosswalks\, and multi-use paths that connect neighborhoods and enhance community mobility. Voorheesville’s proposal focuses on expanding walkable routes near its village center\, while Buchanan is targeting upgrades to pedestrian safety and connectivity along a key roadway connecting an elementary school with the Village’s primary recreation complex. \nJim stressed the importance of being present for our clients. “Showing up more often or finding a reason to be in a community is definitely more helpful than remote video calls or corresponding by email\,” he said. Melanie’s involvement on the ground in Voorheesville reinforces our approach of building trust through personal engagement. These efforts often lead to repeat business with clients\, allowing us to help them further their community improvements. \nFor Jim\, the most rewarding part is seeing projects come to life. Even when the final results differ from initial plans\, the impact is significant. “Ultimately\, you’re making people’s lives better\,” Jim reflected. From housing to infrastructure\, these projects would not happen without external funding—and without the dedication of professionals like Jim and Melanie. The Voorheesville and Buchanan projects are more than grant applications; they represent opportunities to build lasting partnerships and strengthen our role as trusted advisors. Through strategic funding and personal engagement\, our team is helping communities thrive—one project at a time.

SUMMARY:National Surveyors Week
DESCRIPTION:Happy National Surveyors Week! \nThis year\, we’re spotlighting just a couple of the unique and impactful projects our Survey Division is working on—and showing how surveyors play a critical role in shaping infrastructure\, restoring and preserving history\, and planning for the future. \nOne standout project is the Star Line (Southern Tier Area Reliability Project)\, part of New York State’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA). This initiative supports the state’s goal of achieving net‑zero emissions by 2050\, which requires major upgrades to aging transmission infrastructure across New York. Our survey team is providing Avangrid with detailed right‑of‑way mapping (seen in images 1-6) to define ownership limits\, support easement acquisition\, identify encroachments\, and assist with construction planning for new transmission lines. \nWe’re also proud to be working on the New York State Capitol Eastern Approach Rehabilitation Project\, a historic preservation effort focused on repairing and restoring the eastern side of the Capitol building. Due to aging construction\, key elements—including the staircase\, promenade\, portico\, and executive ramp—require repairs and replacements. Our team is providing quality assurance and quality control for vertical survey data in accordance with Office of General Services requirements (seen in image 7+). In addition\, we are monitoring a retaining wall along the executive ramp during excavation to ensure structural stability as surrounding ground is removed. \nFrom climate‑focused energy projects to safeguarding iconic landmarks\, surveyors are involved in far more than meets the eye—and we’re proud of the work our team does every day.
