Broome Gateway Rest Area – Interstate 81 Taste NY Alterations

The Department of Agriculture & Markets (AGM) sought to open a new Taste NY market at the Broome Gateway Rest Area serving northbound traffic on Interstate 81, between the Pennsylvania state line and Exit 1, in the Town of Kirkwood, Broome County. C.T. Male Associates provided the Department of Transportation with multi-disciplined architectural and engineering services for the alterations made to the existing Broome County Information Center. These alterations were made to facilitate the adaptive reuse of the building as a Taste NY market that will promote New York State farms, wineries, dairies, and small–scale commerce.

The architecture of the interior fit out was intended to combine contemporary and colonial features, as well as complementing the informational displays highlighting both the Susquehanna River Valley and regions throughout the State. In addition to the Taste NY venue sponsored by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, the facility provides tourist information year-round.

With a unique branding objective by the State and based upon our previous success with the adaptive reuse for the new Taste NY facility located on the Taconic State Parkway, the project design needed to address a multitude of agency requirements while maintaining an aggressive construction schedule. C.T. Male Associates also assisted with design modifications needed when operational changes were instituted to incorporate point of sale terminals in order to assure conformance with the design intent.

C.T. Male Associates provided a design solution that successfully accommodated the various retail objectives of the client, while incorporating modern and efficient systems and new features into the newly renovated space for its modern use. Due to the County’s ongoing tourist commitments in the existing facility, C.T. Male Associates was also cognizant of the fact that the facility needed to remain operational throughout the construction process.
