Empire State Plaza Grand Staircase Rehabilitation
C.T. Male Associates Surveyors Use 3D Laser Scanning
C.T. Male Associates is currently taking part in a project to rehabilitate the Empire State Plaza Grand Staircase. C.T. Male Associates’ Land Surveying Division is working with Allegrone Masonry of Pittsfield, Massachusetts on the project for the New York State Office of General Services.
The Grand Staircase, which consists of 2,262 granite steps and benches, is located over Madison Avenue in the City of Albany and extends from the plaza up to the New York State Museum. C.T. Male Associates is using the state of the art technology known as Terrestrial LiDAR 3D Laser Scan to locate the existing horizontal and vertical positions of all steps and benches. This hi-def 3D laser scan is collected by scanning an area to collect high-density spatial imaging data using millions of coordinates with extremely high accuracy.
Throughout this project, C.T. Male Associates’ surveyors have used their experience and expertise to overcome obstacles, such as rain showers, which affect the performance of the 3D laser scan. Allegrone is currently in the process of removing and replacing every step and bench, a process which is to be completed over the next two years. Moving forward, C.T. Male Associates will continue to work with Allegrone, utilizing the 3D laser scan technology to ensure that the steps and benches are replaced at their original locations.
